The prevailing swells in the region arrive from the South Pacific, and due to the orientation of the coastline here, it has much calmer water – most of the time, swells can also come from the North Pacific. That makes it great for keeping a boat on an anchor, and great for snorkelling.

Playa del Coco is a charming beach town located in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica only 23 km to the International airport (Liberia – LIR). This picturesque destination is popular among tourists and expats due to its beautiful beaches, warm climate, and laid-back lifestyle.
Playa del Coco is the second largest village in the region after Tamarindo. It has a busy night life which is enjoyed by an older age demographic than the surfing town, Tamarindo. Right next to playa del Coco is the quaint village of Ocotal, which is more tranquil.


Playa del Coco does not have good surfing waves, but offers beautiful small beaches golden sand in coves, where you can enjoy swimming and watching fish through your mask in the clear water. It is great place to keep a boat, and there are fishing, diving, and whale & dolphin watching trips available from the locals.

Playa Ocotal is an excellent spot if you wish to discover all of the beauty the Gulf of Papagayo at the north of the Guanacaste. The Liberia International Airport (LIR), formerly known as the Daniel Odube Quirós International Airport, is conveniently only 21 km away. It is at the end of the road passing through los Cocos and does not attract the attention of the tourists visiting Playas del Cocos. This means that it has easy access to an excellent variety of restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, casinos, bars and many more. Apart from the diverse amount of amenities you get in the nearby town, Playas del Coco also offers you plenty of touristic activities in which you can take part of; scuba diving, snorkeling, canopy, kayaking, fishing, ATV tours, horseback riding. The opportunities are endless in this beautiful zone of Guanacaste. While Ocotal is smaller and quiter than Playas del Coco, it has plenty to offer itself. You can indulge in most of the same activities as Playas del Coco but with a change of scenery, so you can alternate between the areas as you please. The two towns run each other.
